Many people think that New York City must be the capital of New York State but that honor goes to Albany, New York. The city received its charter in 1686, making Albany the second oldest chartered settlement in the United States. Located near the junction of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers, the town quickly became important to the growth of the state. In 1797, Albany became the capital of New York. Within a few years the city became a center of transportation between the East Coast to the interior of the country. Robert Fulton's first steamboat line ran from Albany to New York City, the Erie Canal was completed in 1825 and a railway was completed in 1831 connecting Albany to Schenectady.

The State Capitol building is one of the few capitol buildings that does not feature a dome. It does however, offer a history of being one of the longest running public works projects in the history of New York. Building of the capitol began in 1867 and continued until 1897. The capitol is famous for its intricate carving along what is known as the 'Million Dollar Staircase'. When visiting the capitol make it this staircase a 'must see' destination. Outside the Capitol is the Empire State Plaza that is the focal point of downtown Albany. Look for great restaurants, shopping and displays of all sorts when you come to the Plaza.
