All about Winston-salem

Among all of the towns in central North Carolina, Greensboro has a long history of being involved in the forefront of the American experience. The third largest city in the state, Greensboro is also part of what is known as the Piedmont Triad. Combining Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem the Triad has a population of nearly 1.4 million.

The town is home to several universities and colleges. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCA&T), Guilford College, Bennett College, and Greensboro College all call Greensboro home. The city is the home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball club of the South Atlantic League. The Chrysler Classic of Greensboro, one of the oldest national PGA Tour golf events, is held in Greensboro every fall at Forest Oaks Country Club.

The Civil Rights movement came to Greensboro on February 1, 1960, when four black college students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College sat down at an all-white Woolworths lunch counter, and refused to leave when they were denied service. Hundreds of others soon joined in this first sit-in, which lasted for several months. Such protests quickly spread across the South, ultimately leading to the desegregation of Woolworths and other chains. Today, a museum is being created to commemorate the events that helped to propel the South out of the Jim Crow culture.

Greensboro enjoys gently rolling hills and is midway between the mountains of North Carolina and its beaches to the east. This location helps to explain why the region is so popular with visitors and businesses. With two major Interstate highways intersecting in the town, Greensboro is close to mountains and sea and the oter towns in the region.

First Lady Dolley Madison and short-story writer William Sydney Porter (a.k.a. O. Henry) were born in Greensboro. Edward R. Murrow, famed World War II CBS radio broadcaster, one of the pioneers of TV news and a five-time Emmy winning journalist, was born just outside of the city.

The Greensboro Coliseum Complex was conceived as, and continues to be a multi-building facility to serve the Citizens of Greensboro and the surrounding area through a broad range of activities, including athletic events, cultural arts, concerts, theater, and other entertainment, educational activities, fairs, exhibits, and public and private events of all kinds, such as conventions, convocations, trade and consumer shows. It is both a primary center of activity for the community as well as one of many resources central to community-wide events.

I like to use Greensboro as my place to stay when visiting North Carolina. I can get to so many places when I stay here that it makes sense to plan day trips that radiate out from Greensboro. The maps available on the Golden Hare Travel Services sites will help you plan your day trips or business travel plans.
