All about Thomasville
High Point is a city located in Guilford County, North Carolina with a population of nearly 86,000. High Point is known for its furniture, textiles, and bus manufacturing. It is generally regarded as the "Furniture Capital of the World" and "North Carolina's International City" due to the bi-annual furniture market held each April and October that attracts almost 80,000 exhibitors and buyers from around the world. High Point also boasts over 100 furniture plants, 60 retail discount furniture stores, great golf and lake recreation opportunities.
High Point’s development was a result of geography and the advantages afforded it through transportation. Early Piedmont transportation routes included the 1852 Great Western Plank Road and the 1856 North Carolina Railroad, both of which intersected at the future site of High Point. Transportation lines not only allowed for raw materials such as cotton and lumber to be brought easily into the city, but aided in delivering processed goods to distant markets.
Established in 1924, High Point University is a liberal arts institution with approximately 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students from 52 countries and 36 states at campuses in High Point and Winston-Salem. It is ranked by U.S. News and World Report 12th among comprehensive universities in the South and in the top 100 nationally. The university offers 45 undergraduate majors and five graduate-degree programs.
High Point is served by Piedmont Triad International Airport, (GSO) which also serves Greensboro, North Carolina and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Amtrak station is situated at 100 West High Street. Interstate 85 runs through High Point, southeast of the original interstate roadway, which is now designated Business 85. High Point is also going to have Interstate 74 through it in a few years.
